Dilan 1991: A Brand New Challenge

I’m beyond happy to receive another invitation for composing the sequel of one of the best-selling Indonesian movie of all time, Dilan 1991. It is such an honor that I’m still trusted to do it.

The movie is an adaptation of Pidi Baiq’s novel Dilan Bagian Kedua: Dia Adalah Dilanku Tahun 1991 (Dilan Part Two: He’s My Dilan In 1991), the second book in a series and was directed by Fajar Bustomi. I have done several movies together with him.

The news came to me by surprise that Dilan 1991 won the all-time Indonesian Box Office record with a total of 800,000 viewers up to the first day’s screening. It was watched by 80,000 people at the premiere and 720,000 in its first day in cinemas; the most audience of all time on the first day!

Apparently, the success of Dilan 1991 does not only become the spotlight of Indonesian’s media. Deadline, an online media based in the United States, also reviewed the fantastic achievement of the movie.

The challenge for composing the movie score is brand new for me, because the script has developed a lot. The characters also have passed the certain processes, gone through several conflicts, thus the movie showcases emotions to a deeper level of depth, complexity, and intensity than the first (Dilan 1990). That’s why the music also becomes deeper. I also composed the score using new instruments and making new theme notations, which are different from Dilan 1990.

I hope you enjoy it!
